Urban Suburbia

To the editor: Dan McGraw makes a good point in the final paragraph of “Making Downtown Safe for the Rich” (On Second Thought, March 30, 2005). In response, I pose this question: Are the rich trying to turn downtown into an “urban suburb”? There are few practical, day-to-day businesses there (grocery stores, cleaners, etc.) other than those that serve the local office culture. Now they’re in denial that the courthouse is a few blocks away and that jails and courthouses are usually adjacent to each other.
If the rich don’t want to accept the realities of urban life, I can think of a few people who would happily take their places.
