Staring at the Walls

The local galleries always serve drinks at Gallery Night, so make sure you bring a designated driver to take you around to all the exhibition spaces and prevent you from dropping $350 on a sculpture made out of a nasal spray bottle embedded in a bagel. (An unidentified buyer actually did this a couple of years ago, though it wasnít at Gallery Night.)

As always, some of the galleries are running group shows: Alpine, Carol Henderson, Evelyn Siegel, and others simply asked their regular artists and a few newcomers to contribute some pieces. Others are centered around a single artist ó Gallery 414 has humorous paintings by Steve Cruz, while William Campbell highlights works in various media by Steven Daly. The most intriguing shows, however, are built around a theme. NRH Gallery titled its show Small and devoted it to pieces that didnít exceed eight inches square, while Galerie Kornye West looked for paintings inspired by the travels of different artists to countries around the world.

Special mention should be made of the galleries using this night as a coming-out party for themselves, and not just the art inside. Two new exhibition spaces are opening up: one entitled 3 Billion moves into the space formerly occupied by 7th Street Gallery next door to the Wreck Room, while another one called Gallery 5017 debuts on El Campo off Camp Bowie Boulevard. Art patrons looking for something worthwhile to do should welcome these newcomers to the neighborhood.

Gallery Night is 2-9pm Sat at various locations around Tarrant County. Admission is free.
