In olden days — the early 1990s — electronica fans in search of live action had two options. They could stare at a couple of geeks poking at computers, or they could risk exposure to Ecstasy and other horrors at an underground rave. Either choice led to possible death, from boredom or from squashing.

Nowadays electronica and many of its subgenres are safe, corporate, and fun-fun-fun. Clear Channel Communications — the megaconglomerate that owns and programs much of commercial radio — is co-producing the electronica event of the year, Delta Heavy Spring 2002 Tour. And what a production it is. The convoy of tour buses and trucks includes one sixty-footer just to hold the speakers. Another carries components for the three giant video screens and the synapse-frying sound system. There’s the paraphernalia for the creepy-cool, Tim Burton-esque stage designs, complete with tribal-themed visuals. The lighting system is, naturally, interactive, built to respond to the musicians and audience.

Yet another bus houses superstar Brit d.j.s Sasha (né Alexander Coe) and John Digweed, maestros of the up-tempo, repetitive dance music known as trance. Solo, each has produced discs in the trendsetting Global Underground mix series. Together, the mixmasters have released nine innovative albums, with best-of-show going to 1999’s Northern Exposure: Expeditions, a two-c.d. set that gets the party started with seamless synth satisfaction.

Expect a throbbing extravaganza of sight and sound, a cross between a U2 concert and an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. If $20 seems steep, consider that the show is scheduled to run until 4 am. That’s a paltry $2.86 per hour for what’s sure to be a Happening.

Sasha and John Digweed, Jimmy Van M, 9pm Sun. $20-25. Bronco Bowl, 2600 Fort Worth Av, Dallas. 888-597-7827 or www.cc.com.
