Things are moving fast for Collin Herring: Since forming his quintet, Pine Tree Logic, earlier this year, Herring has logged a lot of hours at the Aardvark and nabbed studio whiz Matt Pence (drummer for Centro-matic) to produce his forthcoming debut. The way Herring has applied himself on the scene, you’d think he’d been around forever. And then there are the songs, which seem to come from the emotional depths of an old man who’s basically seen and done everything and been through more cartons of cigarettes and more bottles of booze and more heartaches than two or three people — even though Herring is an upbeat, healthy twentysomething with good humor to spare.

You could consider the sound alt-country, but then you would be leaving out a lot of stuff: bombastic beats, rock riffage, punk attitude. Watching Herring perform live, it’s hard to take your eyes away from the stage. Here you have this young, charismatic frontman with a voice as intense and nasal as a young Dylan’s, writhing all over the stage, jamming on his acoustic, while the finely tuned Pine Tree Logic responds to his every cue. His voice won’t rise above an impassioned plea, but it will deliver all the emotive force of a death-metalhead’s screams.

Fort Worth is awash with super-talented singer-songwriters. Count Collin Herring among them. — Matt Smith
