The long-standing and swanky bar/restaurant 8.0 looks to be getting a little closer to becoming a bona fide original live music venue. In addition to KFWR/95.9-FM The Ranch’s weekly Texas Music series, the Sundance Square establishment is now opening its breezy patio stage to less-countrified performers, small and — like tomorrow’s act — big. Even though some of his songs have been covered by the likes of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson, Stephen Bruton is nigh impossible to pigeonhole. While he doesn’t do rap or opera (or rap-opera), the native Fort Worthian manages to incorporate a little of every kind of guitar-based music into his sound, from traditional blues to rock to just about all points in between. Unlike a lot of other six-string masters, Bruton doesn’t have a single signature guitar tone, but don’t think for a second that the fiftysomething former ax-slinger for Bonnie Raitt can’t wail. His fifth and most recent c.d., From the Five, is loaded with introspective yet occasionally fleet fretwork. Another point where he differs from a lot of other guitar gods: Bruton never puts soloing above the song.

Back from a tour of Germany, England, Scotland, and the Netherlands, Bruton could have done worse than end up in what’s fast becoming an address folks visit not just to be seen but to see some killer shows. On tap at 8.0 over the next few weeks are Elvis T. Busboy, Doyle Bramhall, and a smattering of regional homegrown talent.

Tomorrow (Thu) at 8.0, 111 E 3rd St, FW. 817-336-0880.
