Fabulous, Unfabulous

Fabulous, Unfabulous

In its eighth incarnation, the Fort Worth Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival once again is in a new venue. This time itís the Rose Marine Theatre. Youíd think that the festival could find a permanent home after eight years, but the unsettledness has become part of its charm. Itís almost like a touring event ó will it be in your neighborhood in 2007?

The centerpiece film this year is George Bamberís big-screen adaptation of Eric Ornerís popular comic strip The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green, starring Daniel Letterle (who played the straight guy in Camp). Thereís plenty more to hook casual moviegoers, though. For local interest, thereís Karen Seimearsí documentary short Dallas Diamonds, which follows the womenís football team, as well as Dave Stovallís The Blue Saloon, a comedy about the mafia (both the Italian-American and gay varieties) that was shot entirely in Fort Worth. Both movies are receiving their world premieres here.

Lisa Ades and Lesli Klainbergís Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema documents the history of gay movies up to and including Brokeback Mountain, revisiting the seismic changes that have taken place in the last 10 years. Thereís also a feature called Lesbian Grandmothers From Mars (the town in Pennsylvania, not the planet). And if you want something really out there, try Jennie Livingstonís short film Whoís the Top?, about a lesbian couple under stress from one partnerís obsession with S&M and a bad-boy poet (Steve Buscemi). Oh, did we mention that this is a musical comedy? Where else will you see something like that?

The Fort Worth Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival runs Thu-Sun at Rose Marine Theater, 1440 N Main St, FW. Tickets are $8-80. Call 817-820-0079
