Still More on Moore

To the editor: I really think Kristian Lin was off base in his review of Fahrenheit 9/11 ("Weapons of Mass Delusion," June 24, 2003). He says, "The Magic Kingdom played directly into the hands of a filmmaker whose martyrdom complex rivals Mel Gibson’s and who knows how to milk a situation for every drop of publicity."

How, exactly, did Moore exploit this situation? Disney did refuse to release his film. The right wing (and for that matter, most of the mainstream media) has gone out of its way to slime Moore. Someone isn’t being "paranoid" if they are really out to get him, and a lot of people are clearly out to get Moore.

Lin was skeptical of footage of Baghdad kids playing and people eating in restaurants, which he said implied that the city was a happy place before the Americans started dropping bombs. Isn’t it clear that everything the mainstream media has reported about Iraq has been a crock, from non-existent weapons of mass destruction to the Jessica Lynch fairy tale? Lin also wrote that when Moore airs the grievances of 9/11 victims, Iraqis, and others, "all you feel is disgust" at "the director who’s exploiting them." According to your logic, any media person who interviews grieving people is "exploiting" them. Another crock. I don’t know where you saw this movie, but when I watched it at the AMC Palace, that scene had a powerful emotional effect on the packed theater. I saw more than a few people dabbing the tears from their eyes. I think that millions of viewers across the country were grateful to Moore for giving the victims a platform to tell their stories, which have been utterly ignored by the mainstream media. In fact, if I were going to apply the word "bastard" to anyone, it’d be aimed at the spineless news media in this country, including Fort Worth Weekly.

To the editor: So Kristian, you didn’t like the movie, but you can’t stand Michael Moore? Is that what you were trying to convey in your review? Or were you trying to excuse Bush and his boys from all their arrogant, self-righteous, "led by God" moves? I can’t wait to see the film!
