Al Sadrís Sins

To the editor: Iím writing in response to the article by K.R. Anderson entitled ďElephant HuntingĒ (On Second Thought, Aug. 18, 2004). Iím a soldier currently stationed in Iraq (I read Fort Worth Weekly from the internet). First off, Iím quite sure I havenít seen very much unbiased reporting on a lot weíve done over here from either British or American media. Ms. Anderson can choose to believe what she wants to believe of what sheís fed by either. It doesnít really matter to me. However, I do take exception to her referring to Muqtada al Sadr as a ďdefender of his homeland.Ē Iíve had a chance to see up close what he and his Mahdi army are capable of. Of course you donít get many western reporters telling you how he and his militia have terrorized and killed those who donít do as the rebel leader says they should. As for the reference to Ruby Ridge and Waco, neither of those leaders was wanted for murder (another small detail she seems to have overlooked), and the U.S. military has been as cautious as possible not to cause undue damage to the holy sites the Mahdi Army is fighting from. If the writerís worried about reporting the facts, I suggest she get on a plane, get over here, and spend some time with the soldiers on the ground ó unlike so many reporters who rarely seem to leave the Al Rashid Hotel in the International Zone (formerly the Green Zone).
