Homemade Whine

To the editor: I realize that itís a reviewerís job to be glib, but it really bothers me when I read a review (especially of one of my sonís albums) and the writer has not bothered to listen to the entire album. It is always obvious, especially when a review fails to mention the last five songs and one of those songs is the single that is getting national airplay, that the reviewer took a short cut. Jeff Prince suggests at the end of his review of Bandwagon (Listen Up, Sept. 8, 2004) that most music critics may be jerks, and certainly the nastiness of his review would suggest that he is one. As I write this, I am grading essays for my English class. Whether itís good or bad, I feel an obligation to read each one to the end, because itís my job, and the writer deserves to have his or her work respected. Jeff Prince is a jerk because he doesnít respect the band enough to listen to the entire album, and that is his job.

Editorís note: Prince listened to the album by 1100 Springs a dozen times over three weeks. He enjoyed much of it, but in his review pointed out what he considered were its shortcomings. And he likes parents ó even trash-talking ones ó who stick up for their kids.
