Seems like yesterday when nearly every “Texas Music” artist in the state was either thinking of or actually throwing his own “picnic” modeled after Uncle Willie’s largely successful annual summer get-together — as if we needed another excuse to hang out and party. Now that the fad appears to be fading, only a couple of events, including Willie’s, remain. One of ’em is Tommy Alverson’s “Family Gathering.” Entering its seventh year, the weekend-long Texas Music-fest has stayed viable in large part to Alverson’s pluck, but also to his ability to round-up some worth-a-shit acts, some whose association with “Texas Music” — as known and defined by The Ranch’s marketing execs — is tenuous at best.

A lot of these artists are flat-out honkytonkers, including Dallas’ 1100 Springs and Fort Worth’s own Bodie Powell. Others — well, let’s just say that while they may aspire to the hipster cachet afforded by the senseless “Texas Music” handle, they can’t hide their old-school roots. Gary P. Nunn, Stephen Fromholz, Ed Burleson, Larry Joe Taylor, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Johnny Bush, Cornell Hurd, and Alverson himself — all of these guys could have played honkytonks from here to Oklahoma to Colorado 50 years ago and not have sounded out of place. Semantics aside, the one thing to keep in mind when you consider shelling out about $50 for this event is that no matter where you’re from or whose state flag you fly, you’re welcome to enjoy the good, solid, singer-songwriter-ish country music on parade at the “Family Gathering.”

Everything kicks off Thursday, at 5 p.m. The event will take place at Tres Rios River Ranch, in Glen Rose, about 50 miles southwest of the Metroplex. For more information, go to www.tommyalverson.com.

Thu, Fri, Sat, at Tres Rios River Ranch, Glen Rose. $20-$48. www.tommyalverson.com.
